Joint lives policy A life insurance policy that covers two lives.

Joint will A will made by two or more individuals.

Judge advocate A judge who is responsible for the British military’s court martial process.

Judicial immunity

Legal protection that protects those employed by the judiciary, such as judges, from liability for their actions during judicial proceedings.

Judicial separation A legal declaration that a married couple are no longer living together under one roof and that all normal martial obligations have ceased. Also known as ‘legal separation’.

Jurisdiction The authority granted to legal bodies to administer justice.

Jury Service A citizen’s obligation to serve as a juror in a legal proceeding as and when required. Also known as ‘jury duty’.

Justifying bail The process of demonstrating to a court that an individual who has been granted bail has the means to meet the specified surety, should bail be broken.

Juvenile offenders Individuals aged 17 or younger who have committed an offence, and are above the age of criminal liability. Also known as ‘youthful offenders’.
